Nameri National Park regarded as the most beautiful parks of Assam covering an area of 200 Sq. Kms nestled at the foothills of Eastern Himalayas. It attracted the tourists from all parts of the world to view the wide range of animals and endangered species like white winged wood duck, Sloth Bear, Tiger Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Sambar, Gaur, Indian Wild Dog, four varieties of Hornbill and many other winged species. The Park is also famous for high density of elephant population.
The park stretches along the banks of the beautiful Himalayan river, Jia Bhoroli, which was once known for its thriving population of the golden Mahseer. The park has lost much of its charm owing to negligence and other reasons, but the eastern bank of the Jia Bhoroli still has patches of natural forest that provide habitat to the myriad variety of fauna, both animals and birds.
Nameri National Park came into existence in 1985 with an area of 137 sq. Kms. However, in 1998, the park was officially announced as a National Park, which is famous in the world for its rare collection of 300 species of birds: four species of Hornbills, an abundance of Mainas, Bee Eaters, Barbets, Babblers, Bulbuls, Plovers, Ibis, Bills and endangered White Winged Wood Duck etc.
Major Wildlife Attractions
Tourists and bird’s lovers from all over the world attracted to this Nameri National Park to view the numerous species of mammals like Assamese macaque, wild dog, Bengal fox, jungle cat, hog deer, mouse deer, leopard, tiger, fishing cat, wild boar, Indian porcupine, Indian pangolin, flying squirrel etc.; various species of flora like Bombax ceiba, sterculia villosa, zizypphus jujube along with non aquatic grassland species like andropogon, Ipomea reptans, enhydra flushians, nymphia, wichornia etc. The park is also famous for birds and insects like white winged duck, drongos, beautiful nuthatch, grey headed fishing eagle and many more insect life like butterflies, moths, spiders, ants and termites. Nameri is a treat for any entomologist.
Water Sports in Nameri National Park
Tour to this park also gives an opportunity to the tourists for water sports activities of river rafting where the tourists can enjoy with the entire family while swimming, sunbathing in different river islands. Angling is also possible in the river islands for keen anglers subject to regulation by the forest department.
How to Reach There
Road: Nameri National Park is well connected by the local and national highways that connect it with al the major cities of Assam. However, regular buses ply to and from Tezpur.
Rail: Nameri National Park is connected with the network of Indian Railways with the nearest Railway Station is Rangapara, which is 60-Kms from Bhalukpong, which is 21-km from the park, in Sonitpur district.
Air: The nearest airport is Saloni about 10-km from Tezpur, in Sonitpur district, which is 181-km away from Guwahati.
